The purpose of Immunity Testing is
identification of product vulnerability to various
types of "real world" electromagnetic
phenomenon. The types of electromagnetic interference
simulated are those to which a product will likely be
exposed in normal usage. Most products destined for
the European market usually bear the CE mark.
Application of the CE mark signifies compliance with
all applicable European "Directives."
Immunity testing is required to demonstrate
compliance with the essential requirements of the
"EMC" Directive 89/336/EEC. Article 4(b) of
this directive states; "The apparatus shall be
so constructed that" it has "an adequate
level of intrinsic Immunity of electromagnetic
disturbance to enable it to operate as intended."
Although neither the FCC nor Industry Canada
require Immunity testing, there are nevertheless
benefits to be gained from product-designs that are
immune to electromagnetic interference: Improved
product reliability and greater customer satisfaction.
